Wk 6 Lincoln in the Dark LA Assignment

We have started exploring Lincoln in the semi-dark. We have been taking notes about the places in which our story might take place. This story can be a fantasy or realistic fiction but it must include the student in a first person role being stuck at Lincoln in the DARK. This is NOT a Halloween story. This narrative story takes students through out our school using transitional sentences and phrases to get through at least five different rooms in our school. Remember each time the students goes into another room they must be in a different paragraph.

Dialogue is introduced if they are At Lincoln in the Dark with friends. Each time a different person talks it is a different paragraph. If they use their friends or teachers in their stories they must have the person's permission. No one can die in this story.

The purpose is to entertain the listeners and readers (Your Classmates and Teacher), set up a situation that would cause you to be at Lincoln in the dark (Problem or The Stories Conflict) , move through at least five different rooms within our school (Sequence of Events) and escape the school (Solution or Conflict Resolution).

Please keep these G or PG rated. No foul language will be permitted. Remember you are writing for school.

WARNING:

This is to be READ BY Flash Light in the DARK of the Auditorium. If you do NOT write one, then you do not get to come to the reading of AT LINCOLN IN THE DARK. We will find another location for you to be writing. Due date Rough Draft Friday, October 21 and Final Draft is Friday, October 28th.

Helpful Hints:

FYI:Students found that if the story was typed they could read it better by flashlight. It does not need to be typed if you write dark enough and clear enough.

As hoped the MVSD website is up and running but we have not been told how to use it as of yet. So I am back to My old blog that works for now.

Today we have the updated Spelling lists for this month as well as the HWC for September and October on line. They are google docs that can be opened from any computer. They are configured slightly differently than the ones that were sent home but all the info is there. I hope this helps people that tend to lose their papers.

All extra credit and grades are cut off June 3rd. We will be sharing our Science Experiment Boards and the results of our at home experiments with the class on Monday, June 6th.

We will set up in the auditorium on Tuesday, June 7th.

June 8th we will be Math MAP testing in the AM.
The PM of June 8th we will be participating the school wide Science Fair.

This assignment is assigned well in advance for those who want to create something large with a lot of recycled items or a few. Time is your friend in this art piece. You have over a month to start collecting and creating art out of recycled items. Be save and good luck.

Recycled Can Art Sculpture or Display:

Design an art sculpture or Scene with at least one Can. (Cans include: Soup Coffee, pop, pet food, etc.)

The whole can can be the sculpture or you can add other cans and recycled items with it.

Sculptures can be designed to be useful, representations or realistic items, portraits, or landscapes. your imagination is the limit.

Sculptures can not be weapons or shaped into something illegal at school.

Safety Tips:

For Safety reasons, ask for an adult to help in the cutting of cans.

Use gloves to hold sharp objects if you need to work with them for this project.

Protect your eyes if you are cutting sharp mettle or sanding items down.

Make sure that items are thoroughly washed out with soap and water.

If the sculpture is larger than the bus driver allows please have an adult deliver it to school and be willing to bring it home after the art auction May 20th. Thank you.

Once you have created your masterpiece of decorated recycled can(s) describe your art work. In Cursive. Include:

Also sign his or her exercise in Planner for their Wednesday Check in. Remember these are signatures twice a week showing at least 20 minutes of exercise on different days. Book Report due Feb. 28th

The last day of February the class has known that they need to be ready to have a book to share with the homeroom class. This book should be a book that your child can rate highly on a scale from 1-10 (ten is the best) as one of the best books he or she has read. They should not be wasting their time on books that they would rate less than a 6. Life is too short and their are so many great books. They have had many opportunities to be reading throughout this month. We will continue to read during enrichment time in class. Please encourage your child to continue to read great books. All students need to have a book to read at school even if he or she has finished reading the first book. Just keep reading.

The class will verbally share the books with the class. Tell their favorite part and advise other to read the book too. If your child has read more than one book in the past month I have encouraged for them to bring more than one to share. This is to not only get your son or daughter into loving to read great books but to also use a little positive peer pressure toward others to read great books too.

This week we will once again take a pretest in Spelling to see who does not need to study their spelling in this very busy last week of school.

We had so many disruptions last Friday. That today we will share our posters. They were checked in and if not at school Friday pm then they were marked missing.

All Grades continue to be uploaded to AIMS. If you do not have your child's log in. It went home again with them with copies of their report card. It was also placed in their notebooks at the beginning of the year. If still you can not access these online grades, please contact me and I will get you the numbers that you need. As always I take the time to print out staple and send home grades and missing work every Monday and they are to be returned each and every Tuesday. Thanks for continuing this communication with me.

All Spelling lists for January are uploaded to this blog and can be studied ahead of time if needed. Many students will be busy with the play Cinderella this coming month. They may need to be more creative with their study times. Please help them budget their time and work. We will start Spelling Unit 5 wk 1 the first week back in January.

As always this additional work for me maintaining this blog is to help you know and keep track of your child. Hoping this additional time and effort on my behave is helpful to you. Since I only have one follower I am not sure who I am doing this for each month. I think the one follower is "my mom." ;) If not thanks for following me.

Over the holiday break I will place the HWC for January on here. The students will get them the first day of January.

Spelling this week is a Review of Contractions

We took a pretest yesterday. This is our of the norm. But we chose to do this because a student brought up that it was a review and it seemed easy. It wasn't the easiest to encode and air write so we compromised and took a pretest.

7 kids passed with 100% or more. They were given a waiver for their spelling homework this week. They will have an ex for excused in their grade place. If the student did the work and studied over the weekend, of course turn in the work for the grade. The ex score does not hurt the child's grade but the A for the work done would help him or her grade if it is needed.

Invention Posters due this Friday to Share

For two weeks we have worked on creating an invention in theory on paper that could fill a want or need. The students took home plan sheets and checklists that were due last Friday. We will share our invention posters this Friday afternoon.

Poster Must include:

Title (What will you call your invention?
Drawing (Illustration) Labeled diagram (Conceptual Drawing)
Inventor's Name (Your Name so that you get credit)
Illustrator of the poster: Include others if they helped you.

Make up the following:

1-(800) number: Remember it has 1-8_ _ -_ _ _-_ _ _ _ could be letter or numbers. Look at a phone and see what letters go with each number.
Web address www. Remember: Endings of web addresses:.com means company, .net means network, .org means organization, .edu means education
Catchy phrase or jingle (Advertisement) Example: "Ba-Da-Da-Da-Da, I'm lovin' it"
Materials you would use to create your prototype if money was no object.

Please remember to write your neatest. You want your invention to be patented and purchased in Theory; so it should be as original as you can and be in color to grab the audience's attention.

I hope you enjoyed this writing assignment.

I will not be trying to patten any of these items on the posters. Of course your parents may wish to help you with this. I truly wish that I was the inventor of the rubber band, band aid, or other useful items that I use everyday. I think in this way every time I am frustrated with a situation. I try to think of ways to solve the problem and new helpful inventions. While ironing (which I do not do often), I was trying to untangle my earbud cords. I thought it would be really cool to have a retractable cord on my ear buds, because I hate untangling them. I called around and Best Buy said that a company just had come out with that devise that retracts those cords. Darn another missed opportunity. LOL.

Simple devises that solve people issues are what make money and create a need where no one knew there was a need before. You can do that too. Thinking out of the box is one of our greatest assets as dyslexic people. It is a gift that comes with dyslexic tendencies. Use it and who knows how far it will take you.

Extra Credit is not something I hand you. You must work to find it! I gave all of your work at least a week in advance of the due dates. I have given you homework calendars that have the same due dates on them each week . The routines are clearly marked and required turn in time is always 9AM. You are visually and verbally reminded each day. Our planners are written in and organized assignments under the tabs in your notebook should stay there until you are finished with them and ready to turn them in for a grade. The turn in boxes are well marked. If you have earned 50% on a late assignment then you have not followed through on all of these prescribed organizational guides. You can now go out of your way to help yourself improve.

Good luck! You can do it if you try! You are in charge of your grades and the outcome. It is not your teacher' or your parents' fault. You have this job as a student. Do it well. Remember the deadline for all extra credit is Nov. 5th at 2:55PM

The students have had a month to find and memorize a song and a monologue if they were interested in cast. They will have the opportunity to recite their monologue and sing their song for an oral grade in class today. If you child is interested in a crew they were aloud to memorize a poem. All those interested in cast should memorize a monologue. Packets of suggested monologues were handed out the beginning of September.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct 5th and 6th, we will be auditioning in the school's auditorium and interviewing in Mr. G's room for parts in the cast or crews. This experience will be in front of all the 5th and 6th graders. You as parents can come an attend this two day event if you wish. We will start at 12:35 in the Auditorium. We do not have a designated time for our class to do theirs together. We will be auditioning all students that are interested in cast first on Tuesday.

Hopefully your child brought home the HWC and you have the dates and times of the play.

Your fifth or sixth grade Lincoln student will be able to get into the shows for free. If they have a sibling at the school he or she will also get to come with their class once for free. The day shows are sold out and have been for the last two weeks. Notices have been sent home constantly, (almost daily) reminding kids to buy their tickets, t-shirts, and other play related materials. PR crew also have been sending home notices for food for the Cast and Crew Party on Feb. 10th. I hope you have been getting these communications. LA Wk 7-8"Lincoln In the Dark"
This is a creative narrative first person account of being alone in the dark at Lincoln School.

We have been having a lot of fun this week planning our Language Arts for the following two weeks. We have discovered new locations in our school that were not seen before or seen the way they will be thought of in their stories. With Clipboards in hand, we walked through the bathrooms, hallways, Auditorium, Cinderella Stairway, Cafeteria, Kitchen, Boiler Room, Staff Lounge, and the Custodian's closet on the third floor that leads to the roof.

Their job is to write themselves into a story of "At Lincoln School in the Dark".

For those worried that this is a Halloween Story on demand. This is not a Halloween Story. It can be Fantasy, Western Style, Science Fiction, Fairy Tale come to our school, or Realistic Fiction, but it must be a narrative with the author in first person. I have asked that all students use their imaginations. Please help them keep it PG.

Use of other students' names: If you have permission from the student, you may use their name. Be kind and respectful to your classmates. Make them your friends not enemies in the story. No one can kill off another person or harm them even if they say it is OK.

The story must move through at least 5 different locations in our school. Each time you go to another room you must use a new paragraph. Make sure that there are transitional phrases and sentences that tell how you are getting down the hall or stairs. (I burst through the double doors onto the dark and dreary stairway and stumbled down the flight of stairs with just the green glow of the EXIT sign for a light. My heart was pounding in my ears as I neared yet another door that was locked...)

If you are with someone else moving through the dark and you speak, make sure that you write in dialogue and each new person speaking is in a new paragraph.

Make sure that the story line is your original. Do not take a cartoon or kids show and make it into your story line. It is steeling.

This has been one of my favorite Language Arts assignments and hope to be entertained by what the students write. This assignment is to encourage and excite creative writers.

Facts: Environmental Improvements and Fitness our class came up with at the beginning of this week:

Earth Day was Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Weeded, pruned, and picked up garbage at Edge Water Park
We played exercise games: football, soccer, kickball, Frisbee, basket ball, etc. on the different days
The states require 100 minutes of physical Fitness each week. We are not funded for that in PE.
Lincoln Students receives 30 minutes of PE a week. With Friday Fitness we get 40 more minutes of choice fitness (Choice Groups: indoor games, outdoor games, walking, and yoga)They definitely have at least 20 minutes of walking the stairs each week going up and down to recesses, specialists, reading groups, and lunch.
Miles each day Wednesday 2.?miles , Thursday 1.4 miles round trip, Friday 6.6 miles round trip
Time it took each day: Wed. 30 min. each way, Thurs. 12 minutes each way. Fri. hour to an hour each way (some were faster than others). We also exercised a lot while we were at all locations.
We traveled in three classes Mrs. Johnston's 5th graders, Miss Warren's 6th graders, and Mrs. Rupp's 5th and 6th graders.
Made the goal to reach the top and all 87 students did.
Chaperones came each day so we could go.
The trips were free!!! The Weather was great!!!
We are healthier and the environment is healthier since we did this.

Yes you can use the reading of Science homework and Soc. St. as part of the RAH for those nights that you do it. We are also having a drop in the amount of RAH that is being signed for in our planners.

This BLOG is maintained in my "spare" time. I hope it is of help to you. Last week was the first time some parent refered to the BLOG in that it was not up to date. I will hope to have time to maintain the BLOG better in the future.

Bringing home your copy of the homework calendar, missing work, grades, and filling in the students planners are the students' responsibilities. Class time is set aside for the purpose of filling in the planners and keeping them up to date.

If you would like to help in the classroom, the door is always open. Mondays the homework is passed out first thing. I would love to see some adults with me when we are insuring that all pieces of paper for the week make it into the 28 notebooks before the students walk out the door to S.F.A. at 9:12AM.

Hello Again! A Big Reminder to all those following the BLOGS!

All Grades for Term 2 will be cut off on March 5th. It is a Thursday before a no student day Friday, March 6th. (March 6th is a LID Day. Teacher Math Workshop for the whole district K-12)

There has been 5 Grade sheets sent out over the past quarter that needed a parent signature. There has been examples of what would be appropriate and excepted for extra credit to improve grades in each area. Hopefully you know how your child is doing. Your 5th graders knows whether he or she has shared these with you. In addition Homework was reduced during the first two weeks in Feb. the homework and classwork was only to read, exercise and sign, fluency from SFA teacher and do extra credit or catch up work. 5 of the 28 students did extra credit. This is a very low fraction of the class.

Please talk to your child. Work on any area of concern over the weekend if at all possible.

Conferences will be optional for most students. The dates of early release for conferencing is

Tuesday, March 24th No Conferences (two 1/2 hour planning)
Wednesday, March 25 Conferences that are requested by parent or teacher
Thursday, March 26 Conferences that are requested by parent or teacher

If your child would like to be in this competition the Poems are due to be read on Friday, Jan 30. Names are due to the Librarian soon after that date. Lincoln Classes are allowed to sent two students to Skagit Valley College for this great event of Young Authors each year due to the generosity of our PTA. Thank you PTA.

There will be a tentative Homework Calendar sent home today, Jan. 5. It could change do to the fact that we are working with four other classes on the collaborative Play of The Wizard of Oz.

Your assistance and support during this time is greatly appreciated. Homework expectations will stay the same for all students until Feb. The first two weeks of February, we will not have homework other than exercise and RAH due to the show times and intense rehearsals. Studying for the final exam would be a great thing to do during those weeks if you are not in cast. The final exam practice questions are in each student's script.

All students were given the opportunity to update their student planners yesterday, Nov. 10th with the data found on their Homework Calendars through December Holiday Break. They are responsible for all assignments that are listed on both their planner and Homework Calendars. The planner is a living working document that will be added to as we go through the weeks. Please encourage your son or daughter to check it nightly and look ahead to due dates. This is a huge help in the way of organization and planning. Please do not let notebooks become sloppy. Papers should be in the bindings, not loosely falling out of or crumpled in the bottom of the bag. Thank you for this help.

Yes! This is the only week in November that there will be a Spelling list and Spelling Test. We will continue to study different phonetic rules through out the weeks in which we do not have spelling lists to test. The other weeks are either interrupted with early release or no school days. We will have three weeks of Spelling in December.

After exploring many parts of our great old building: back stage, auditorium, Cinderella stairs, gym, boiler room, cafeteria, staff lounge, etc. the students came back to the room and wrote about what they had heard, seen, smelled, and felt in these rooms. Then they started their story last week. The rough draft was due last Friday, Oct17th. This is a fantasy story that the students are writing about themselves using their senses to get around our great school in the dark. The students have great imaginations. (Some have run wild on their papers.) It is so much fun to see them so excited about writing. Many have written great stories that they have been editing and revising all week.

Hello! Thank you to the 2/3 of the class who did their RAH last night and had it signed for Monday. We are going to continue working on this. If your child has 80% or less on RAH it will appear on the Missing work as INC. Incomplete. This can be fixed by resigning in the Planner and having your child show me so I can fix it in the computer.

We have been working on our X tables in Math Class if your child has me for a math teacher. We have three students who knows there 3X (1 to 12) Your child will have this missing if he or she does not pass 3X this week by Friday. We are also onto our next facts set; 4X. In your child's note book you should find a 4X packet that was made a long time ago, but still is a great way to practice. Flash cards work too. Asking your child the facts before bed, in the car, at breakfast, anytime can help. Yes it is work and time consuming. . . But without the knowledge of their facts, your child will have a really hard time in Math. We want them successful. Thank you.

There will be multiple times where your child can test on 3x and 4x this week. Please look at the packet and see that he or she is studying correctly.

Your copy of the Homework Calendar came home tonight in the Take Home Folder.

Where does my child turn in his or her homework?

Each Morning your child along with all other children in our class sits down and takes out their planner and notebook.

This allows another group of individuals to check the RAH minutes.

Once the students open their planners, they take out their homework due and turn it into the turn in boxes by the classroom door.

Teacher reviews who turned in what to the homework boxes and asks if there are any more assignments.

Teacher makes announcements for the day.
Attendance is taken and Hot lunch.

Bell rings.

Today we as a class were handed out the homework for the week. The handouts were placed in the correct places in the notebook during each subject as it was taught today. As a back up I made sure that all students grabbed their Missing Work report. This went into his or her take home folder. We took time to enter the Homework into our planners on the due dates. At the end of the day we did a whole class desk check and left no papers in our desks. I sure hope that the homework got home to you. We are really trying to get organized. It is a goal.

Homework for the Weekend of September 12-14

Please read 20 minutes at least once over the weekend and sign on the bottom of Monday, Sept. 15th's column in the planner.

It is you child's job to write the title and how many minutes he or she has read. Then you sign nightly.

If your child is in my reading class, there was an additional piece of homework to find a chapter book at least at the 5th grade reading level that he or she could read for a book report. The first report is due Friday, October 3, 2008. This first book report could be on a book that your child has read over the summer and is just finishing. If your child is in this situation he or she can finish the written work for the book report and turn it in early. Then start reading another book for the report that will be due Friday, Oct. 31st. If you would like your child to be reading more than two books in two months due to the length of the book he or she has chosen, that is great. There will only be two book reports due in 5.1 reading class this quarter. Of course your child can do more than the required reports too.

Spelling:Study any missed spelling words that you missed on the Spelling Pretest. Have your parent or guardian sign your spelling list. Staple your 5X each to the back of your spelling list and turn it in for a grade on Friday AM.
LA: Finish up your LA Business Letter (Cover Letter) have an adult reread the letter to you to see if it flows smoothly. Read each word starting at the end of your letter and see if you can find any misspelled words either because you could not sound them out or you did not recognize them.
RAH: Read one last 20 minutes for the week and sign on Friday's Column in the planner
Finish any missing work or late work so that you start out the new week with no missing work.
Exercise: Remember you need two 20 minute exercise activities outside of school that you write in your planner each week for your PE grade.

Today we worked on many things:

We set up our Science notebooks for Landforms Science.
We started our self portraits.
We were invited to join Safety Patrol and LEAF. Applications went home with students. These are not required and you can chose to have your child involved in each of them or neither.
We reviewed Prime Numbers in Math and wrote a multiplication goal in our planners to learn a multiplication set of facts by next Friday. We will know if the child met the goal if he or she passes the timed test. (Only students in homeroom math did this goal.)

Tonight's Homework:

Spelling Story: Students need to write a short story minimum of five sentences that use a spelling word correctly in the story. There needs to be a title, strong beginning, middle, and end. The Spelling story should make sense. We practiced creating a verbal spelling story as a class in class.

All of the above assignments were written in your child's planner on Monday as a class. The materials needed was handed out one at a time and I waited to see that all students had the papers in the correct categories. We are working on organization. If the spelling list or any items is missing please ask your child where it is. If you can not find it. Have them ask for a new one in the AM.

Today, 9/9/08

We added to our Business letters. I wrote one infront of the class and we discussed what was required in the rough draft.

Rough draft- cursive or printed
Final Draft-cursive
An additional copy can be typed or word processed for the portfolio.

Homework due tomorrow, Wednesday, 9/10/08:

RAH: at least 20 min. Signed on Wednesday (Each student should have 60 minutes and three signatures so far.)
Spelling: Write out Spelling Words # 9-16 5x each & Spelling list signed
Soc. St.: Time For Kids can be used as RAH tonight and lead family discussions. Finish hand out on new articles or news stories vs. other kinds of stories.

Remember: PE tomorrow do you have two exercises (at least 20 minutes each) written in your planner and to show Mrs. Scott so you don't have a check and your grades go down?

Spelling:Write your #1-8 spelling words in cursive 5x each on notebook paper
LA/Writing: Start your plan for your business style letter for the cover letter due Friday, Sept 12 (We did start this together in class)
RAH 20minutes Title and signature signed on the bottom of Tuesday. (Read Monday night sign on Tuesdays column)
Missing Work Sheet Signed by parents returned to class.

Additional items to fit into each week:

PE: Exercise written in planner at least 20 minutes two times per week with parent signatures

Additional information:

SFA Reading Groups will begin Thursday, Sept. 11th

In addition to the 20 minutes of reading each night there will be a one minute timed fluency reading that your child will need your help listening to them, following along and helping them improve in reading for smoothness and speed. These forms should be placed in your child's notebook, signed daily and returned to your child's reading teacher each day.

HWC, Wk 36, LA Friendly Letter to Mrs. Johnston

Follow the friendly letter format and write a letter to me as if you were in the country that you chose to do your Social Studies Pacific Rim Report. That report is due May 27 to be shared in class May 28th and 29th.

Friendly Letter is due Friday, May 23. The letter should include the date, salutation (Dear Mrs. Johnston), body of the letter which will include four indented paragraphs. They were discussed today in class. 5/19/05 Also include a closing with your signature.

paragraph 1: Tell where you are and how did you got there? (by plane, boat, car, etc.) Where are you staying? Where are you writing the letter (by the pool, on a deck, a dock, a boat, etc.)

paragraph 2: What are two similarities between the country you are visiting and the United States of America. Give at least two details or reasons in sentence form to explain what you mean.

paragraph 3: What are two differences between the country you are visiting and the United States of America. Give at least two details or reasons in sentence form to explain what you mean.

paragraph 4: What is one or more interesting place(s) in the Pacific Rim Country that you would like to visit. Explain why and what interests you in that location. (Are there special buildings, landmarks, events, etc.)

Use your research to help you. Google if you have not locations to visit in the country. This should also help you in your oral report. Others will want to know what you have learned and what is so interesting in the country.

Closing: Remember this is to be a friendly letter. Close it with a friendly phrase- for example:

A plan sheet will be passed out tomorrow in class the final draft will be due in cursive or typed by Friday, May 23. for further information please refer to the Step Up to Writing Plan and example letter.

Friendly letters were a fourth grade expectation, but using it to write about a place that you have researched in the Pacific Rim is a 6th grade Social Studies expectation. Oh! It is good to be challenged. You have had over three weeks so far to be researching this country. You can do this!

I look forward to reading your letters. I wish we all could go on these virtual trips.

Update to Science Projects

The Science Research Paper is due Monday, March 10, 2008. It can be turned in before that date. Don't forget a bibliography.

Students were told this back on Feb. 22, 2008 and again on Feb. 25 and 26. They had classtime to work on research Feb. 22, and 25-29. They will be working on their bibliography Monday, March 3 and editing their papers.

March Science Experiments Using the Scientific Method

February and March we will be working on setting up student experiments using the Scientific Method.

You may work with a partner or on your own.

We had over 50 books in our classroom to use
Internet websites were options also

We had approximately 3 hours of class time to search the books. If students finish class assignments early they had more time.

Continue to run experiment if it takes time to accumulate data
If experiment is complete and you do not need addional trial tests then start to write up or type your analysis and conclusion for your experiment.
